Windows Live Writer – Pretty cool, this.

Filed under: Technology - Net — Mat Salo @ 7:39 am

For someone often holed up in God-forsaken places with limited web connectivity (me)*, this nifty feature from Microsoft is a Godsend.

The only uncool thing about this is that it only works on Windows –not Mac. But that’s less than ten percent of all home users anyway. And way, way less when it comes to blogs.

So what is it? It’s a web editor that lets you “blog” without connecting to the net and turning on your browser. Yeah, offline, dudes and dudettes!

Ha, now you can do your blogging offline, instead of on your browser doing it live. And you can edit to your hearts content: insert videos, images, hyperlinks –then gives an approximation of what it gonna look like on your blog page. And when you next connect to the web, just hit Publish from the Windows Live Writer (remember, it already asked for your blog password during the installation). No need to go to your Blogger or WordPress site. Cool, eh?

What the application does is, once installed, is import your blog settings. So it looks at your page layouts and settings from say, WordPress, and puts it all on your hard drive.

But what I really like is the copy and paste function that makes it super easy to add photos. For someone with limited bandwidth (again, me), it’s a problem doing it on a browser online.

Hmm… actually the term Live Writer is a misnomer isn’t it? Because it’s not live if you’re doing it on your hard drive.

I suspect the reason Gates, Ballmer & Co came up with this is a knee-jerk reaction to Google’s threat of putting all their applications online –and for free.

Kudos to Microsoft and you can download it here. Try it.

This post was done entirely on Live Writer. Meaning, it was done offline in my bunk bed.

  1. That is cool and I guess I’ve got to download that contraption or whateverpaklahcallit to do this thing. Anyway, I use scribefire and blog offline too. Nice new blog you got here. Is it gonna be one of those special blogs where you only blog on one subject or is it gonna be as rojak as my blog?

Eh Chegu, looks like you beat everybody else to pop the comment cherry! πŸ™‚

Didn’t even know there’s other stuff like scribe. In the past a I just use Notepad or Word, save it and later edit it online. Of course with Word you can’t put pictures in a way that can be transferred to blogger. As for the rojak bit . . . looks like it already is!

Tapi yang best Chegu boleh directly reply in the commentators’ box. Mmmm, why can’t blogger do that?

  2. Salam bro,

Yeeeha! Don’t matter what the blog looks like, nor what kind of blog it is; what matter is you blogging!

Me…I’m a one blogspot man. Hmm, but it does give thoughts, doesn’t it? Thanks bro!

ps. When can I start linking this?

Walaikum salaam… Damn right. What matters is to blog. It’s a free country bro (tell that to Enncik Shahrial!). Can link but I think blogs needs lots of improvement in the cuci mata department. If I can’t impress them with my prose, I’ll dazzle them with bullshit!

Like I said to Chegu, I’ve often been dengki that these WordPress users can directly engage their commentators in their respective space instead of creating separate replies. Eh, nak migrate ke? I’m not performing the hejira, just creating more headaches with 2 separate blogs bro!

  3. holy dung! didnt know this was possible. lemme get this straight; by blogging offline, does this mean we can screw them parliamentarians without the fear of being detected? kihkih…boleh carut ke mat, this blog?

Nak carut, carut lah. Holy fuel injection dung you mean. Look –the parliamentarians are screwing us in the open. So why do we need to be takut? Fight api with api lah. πŸ˜‰

  4. Salaam Bro,
LiveWriter huh? Been using it for some times already, and yeah, it is pretty handy. You can apply some effects on pictures as well, like the one you used; the shadows.
I think you can do some tweaking and hacking to run Windows programmes on Mac. Likewise, I had my laptop double booted with Mac before, but has to revert back to Windows for certain reason. Did the same with Linux. Look for some instruction in πŸ™‚
    Yea, bila boleh start link?

Wa’alaikum salaam… Err, what effects on the pix? I didn’t even notice. Maybe it was the default mode. I guess that’s a plus. The software even figures out the best way to present pictures on the blog page. Wow! Are you serious? Can run Mac OSX operating system on a PC? I never thought that’s possible unless serious hacking is required. One time I saw a guy did a Mac interface so his PC desktop looks like a Mac dashboard. But that’s about it. Personally, my next laptop is Macbook. My better 0.5 has a white 2.4 GHz Macbook and I’m jealous as hell!

  7. Zorro still using sword….considering migrating to Krakatoa…..more destructive than C4…I read and saw the demo on the C4 site. Anyway we use the best tool available that suits our “lifestyle”. Lifewriter it is then for the swampman….does it repel mossies. Cheers buddy.

Sir: I don’t know if “lifewriter” repel mozzies, but from your slurred writing, my I humbly ask, have you laced your teh tarik with malt again? πŸ™‚

  8. Yo MS!

I just cos u have another blog by no means lets u off the hook. I’m still waiting to read the sequel to your furtive Indon escapade. You left me, and a multitude of others I believe, salivating in anticipation after that cocktease of a cliffhanger….u better deliver or else!

Ah…ok. Now that’s out of the way. I am profoundly glad that u r writing again. This Windows writer thingie sounds intriguing. But I happen to blog frm my office and I use a Mac. Yeah…i’m one of the minority, as i have been for a long time in many ways πŸ˜›

As to Microsoft, heheh, I hope the boys of Google will kapak them in earnest. Microsoft wanted it exclusive. Google just went egalitarian. Remember, everything Google has implemented in recent times have been done well.

I can’t wait for the web-based Operating System that Google ws supposed to release by 2010. That will might sound the death knell of IE and who knows, Windows as well.

U know what that means? FREE Operating System. You can just buy your PC or Mac and download the OS online. Bye bye Windows, Mozilla, Mac OS!

Ah I digress….thanks 4 lettin me know abt ur new blog. Mind like yours shud be shared. Thanx for the generosity.

now stop ogling those Indon lovelies and get back to work! :p

Who’s ogling the “Indon lovelies” –as you my dear, put it? Just me, of course. More stories of ogling to follow I assure you, Sis.

  12. i want to learn and master this whole damn blog thingy. I really do. The problem is those html looks html to me. Other ppl might see them as the page layout but Not me. Thats why as you can see from both my blogs, the layouts are the same. lol.

    Ms. Merichah ‘n Garam,

Itu laa I pakai Live Writer.. so langsung tak deal ngan haram jadah gobbledy-gook HTMl tuh! Having said that, banyak gak limitations Windows Live Writer because tak leh tukar font ke apa. But no time laa. I think one needs to go to community college or something to take some courses on these. But I think you’re blog layout looks great and it suits you. Look, I don’t even know how to put them nuffnang things on my blog! And facebook? Lagi laa gonna complicate my life further. (:

Since I had downloaded and used Windows Live Writer only after I had read it here, thought that it is only proper to mention this review in my own most-recent post of

Oh, had `borrowed’ your pictures here … Hope you don’t sue me like what NST had done towards Rocky Bru and Jeff Ooi:-)
